The House

This is not simply where Bowie lived, it is where he became.

Before there was a global superstar, there was a bedroom where a teenager listened to Little Richard records and felt the first shock of possibility.

David lived here, with his parents, from the age of 8 to 20, between 1955 and 1967. It remained the family home until 1970. Heritage of London Trust has purchased the house through a generous donation and plans to restore it to its 1960s appearance.

To preserve the house is to protect the spark, the formative years that shaped one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
The Story

A living, creative space, part museum, part performance, part memory.

The vigour and freedom of 1960s London reached suburban Bromley and Bowie’s world exploded into colour and possibility. Sounds and influences from America, pirate radio and counterculture bounced around the walls of the room his friends saw as the “gateway to the modern world”.

This was a decade of massive upheaval and revolution; the Moon landing and civil rights movements pushed at the boundaries of possibility. Bowie dreamed of the part he would play.

The house will present his youth not as nostalgia but as ignition: where young people can see themselves reflected in someone who dared to think differently. The project will be developed alongside Heritage of London Trust’s Proud Places programme, continuing Bowie’s own youthful vision for the creative arts.

Our aim is for Bowie’s House to open to the public in late 2027. It will be a site of inspiration, a place to learn, explore or simply stand in the room where a spark became a flame.

A lot of people say David’s music saved them or changed their life. It’s amazing that he could do that. Even more amazing that it all started here, from such small beginnings
